March Mosquitos!

Something happened to me over the weekend that I never expected in March, a mosquito bite! I have to say, though, I’ll gladly take early ‘squitoes as long as this weather sticks around. Of course no one wants to be dinner for the mosquitoes, but the chemicals in common insect repellent aren’t appetizing either.

DEET was initially used by the military in insect-infested areas, and it’s now the most common ingredient in commercial mosquito spray. Over 200 products contain DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide). The problem, though, is that DEET is toxic to the central nervous system. And it’s toxicity is increased when combined with other chemicals (think parabens, permethrin, and formaldehyde). Need another whammie? It’s most toxic for kids; and guess who’s most often sprayed (and resprayed) with repellent during long nights of outdoor play.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to provide scary information without an alternative! The creators of our famous lemon poppyseed soap, Blissful Botanica, has the solution. Their Natural Bug Sprayuses effective essential oils like lemon eucalyptus & catnip (yep! Iowa research study shows that catnip oil is 10X more effective than DEET). Witch hazel and aloe vera are also added to soothe existing bites. Now you can safely spend these gorgeous evenings enjoying the backyard.

Daily Green Special: purchase a bottle of Blissful Botanica Natural Bug Spray and we’ll add a free SPF Eco-lips balm (springtime sun is strong too!). Just write “no-DEET” in the checkout notes and we’ll add the free gift to your order. Offer valid until tomorrow’s post. Happy Monday!
