Make a difference…

Tomorrow is International Make a Difference Day.

Whether you’re building homes with Habitat for Humanity, feeding the hungry in a soup kitchen, or raking leaves for a neighbor- no act of kindness is too small.

It doesn’t take enormous amounts of money or time to make a difference in someone’s life…sometimes it’s the smallest, unplanned acts that make the largest impact.

I’ve told the story before about the gentleman who helped me to my car at the grocery store.  It was several years ago, my kids were both babies (in one cart), I was trying to finagle another cart full of groceries, I hadn’t slept four straight hours in probably a week, and all three of us were on the verge of a major meltdown. I’m sure this gentleman never gave pushing the grocery cart to my car another thought (except to wonder if the woman who hugged him in the parking lot ever managed to regain control and get some sleep!), but obviously 9 years later I still think about the difference he made in my day.

The great thing about Make a Difference day is everyone can participate.
Kids, rake the neighbors leaves, call grandma & grandpa to say hello, play with a neighbor’s little ones so the mom can catch a quick break. Need alternatives to volunteering with an organized charity? Donate blood, pay for the person behind you in line, pick up the check for a young couple you see at dinner, donate to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.

I love when companies Make a Difference too.

SpaRitual In Pink Collection: This 2012 cancer awareness collection donates 20% of profits to Fran Drascher’s Cancer Schmancer Foundation.

Endangered Species Chocolate: With each chocolate bar purchase, Endangered Species donates 10% of net profits to organizations that support species conservation, habitat preservation and humanitarian efforts.

Favor the Earth: This weekend we’re trying to make a small difference for a great organization too: 10% of weekend sales will go to Connection of Friends, a non-profit organization located in Wheaton, Illinois. This organization “provides a place for special need participants, ages 16 or older, to engage in social, life skill, volunteer and recreational activities on a daily basis.”

How will you Make a Difference this weekend?

Daily Green Special: This weekend is a perfect time to get started all of your holiday shopping, knowing that you’re also supporting a great organization. 10% off all weekend sales will be donated to Connection of Friends. Have a wonderful and enriched weekend. Happy Friday!
