While the brisk weather brings gorgeous Fall colors, it also marks the arrival of cold and flu season. Frequently washing your hands and getting enough sleep are important for strengthening immunity, but so is your diet. Incorporating fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin-C and antioxidants can help your body’s defenses. Though oranges are a great option, I’m hooked on a different super fruit…KiwiBerries.
I found KiwiBerries at my favorite local produce shop and was intrigued. What in the world was a KiwiBerry?
Turns out, these grape-sized treats are packed with a nutritional powerhouse punch.
In addition to antioxidants and (comparing ounce for ounce) more vitamin-C than an orange, kiwiberries also contain twice the vitamin E as an avocado, vitamin B6 equal to spinach, vitamin A, folate, B2, and carotenoids (important for reducing risk of cancer, heart disease, cataracts and macular degeneration).
But wait! There’s more!
Kiwiberries are also a good source of fiber and have no cholesterol. More potassium (ounce for ounce) than a banana, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc…getting the idea?!
Enjoy as a snack, sliced on a salad, mixed in salsa, smoothies…ohhh I bet they’d be delicious chopped in chicken salad too! The softer the kiwiberry, the sweeter the taste.
What’s the downside? These little explosions of deliciousness are only in season for a short time. Mid-September through December short.
So get thee to your favorite produce shop (Trader Joes & Whole Foods carry them too) ASAP and stock up: some for now & plenty for the freezer.
It’s going to be a long winter, Kiwiberries are one delicious way to keep your immunity strong.
